Small changes with big impact for a healthier New Year

If you made health a part of your New Year’s resolutions, good for you! Health is not a trend, it is well-being, and it’s worth it!

Depending on where you are in your “health journey”, you may know some, all, or none of this; but this is my attempt at a list of “basics” for starting to get healthier in our modern world.

Say goodbye to artificial sweeteners

If you don’t already know, “sugar-free” is worse than sugar. Artificial sweeteners should be avoided like poison (because they are!)

Cut out artificial flavors and colors

Easy to spot in ingredient lists (at least for now, I read they’ll be changing to less conspicuous names eventually), this is a great place to start for reading labels!

Opt for fragrance free soaps and cleaning solutions

Fragrances are one of the most widely accepted and loved toxins, but they are so worth giving up. Your hormones, skin, emotional and mental health, sleep, weight management, stress levels- they’re all affected and will all thank you! (check out my simple non-toxic laundry detergent recipe here)

Ditch dryer sheets

Extremely toxic, extremely unnecessary, easy to let go.

Open windows daily

Even if it’s just for five minutes. Even if it’s just in the car driving up your street. Get that outdoor air indoors!

Get more sun (without sunscreen or sunglasses!)

The sun is one of the best vitamins you can get! Don’t be afraid of it! Studies show that people who embrace the sun and don’t wear sunscreen have far lower rates of skin cancer! Sunscreen is full of chemicals that are absorbed into your bloodstream.

Turn off WiFi at night, keep your phone away from your bed

Easy to decrease your load of EMFs simply by turning off/keeping away when you’re not even awake anyway!

Skip plant based meat

A highly processed food, usually soy-based which is hormone-disrupting. Opt for real meat or other real proteins!

Don’t overhydrate

Drink when you’re thirsty, but drinking too much can deplete your mineral levels.

Don’t buy the lie that unsaturated fats are the healthy ones

Eat saturated fats and avoid PUFAs!

Wear natural fabrics

Like cotton, linen, wool, bamboo.

Drink filtered water or spring water

Switch to fluoride free toothpaste (check out my easy remineralizing toothpaste recipe here)

Tongue scrape and mouth tape

Your mouth is the doorway to your gut- you’ll never not tongue scrape after seeing what comes off first thing in the morning 🤢

Mouth breathing is detrimental to airway health, which affects nearly every system of your body and aspect of your health! If you sleep with your mouth open, mouth taping is such a simple way to improve your health!

Stop complaining and switch to gratitude

Switching to a mindset of gratitude, even in difficult moments and situations, can greatly improve health! We are whole beings- body, mind, spirit, soul. Trying to have a healthy body while having a miserable outlook on life is very hard- maybe impossible. Be thankful, pray, trust God’s provision and sovereignty, serve others, forgive- these will help health as much as any physical means!

Move your body

Anywhere, anyway. Stretch for 5 minutes in the morning or jog up and down your stairs or do 10 pushups before bed. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout, just move!
