I have to be really careful not to “apply” everything (or anything) to America as I read Scripture, but especially when I go through the prophets. (A huge error in modern study and sermons is focusing completely on “personal application” rather than digging into all the meaning of the text.)
Although.
The Bible is living and active, and it does speak to our personal lives as well as having historical and contextual meaning. This morning as I sat in front of the fire, wondering about the results of last night’s election (but intentional to put the Word first before getting online to find out), I couldn’t help but hope that this ancient prophesy, my regularly scheduled reading for today, would also apply to our country:
“Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to [the city]; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me. Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.” Jeremiah 33:6-9
When I did learn the results of the election, I rejoiced greatly!
“Health and healing”. I don’t partake in much news (at all) but I’m out from under my rock enough to know about RFK, his endorsement of and work with Trump, and their awareness of and goal to take on the sickness of our nation, the toxicity of our food and drugs and the scandalous involvement of the organizations that produce and market such.
“The sin they have committed”, “their sins of rebellion against Me”. I’m deeply troubled and burdened, as all Christians should be, at the detestable murder of infants that our nation practices. The results of this election promise more hope than there has been in years for protecting these innocent ones.
“Abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it”. I mean, even families of smaller than six must be excited at the prospect of a reasonable cost-of-living, right?
Monday night our family united in prayer with Christians across the country for God’s will for our country. Whichever way the election could’ve gone, and whatever the future holds, politically or otherwise, God has always and will always take care of His people.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1-4
